2015 FIAT 500 vsĀ  Scion iQ near Norfolk, VA

The Fiat 500 and MINI Cooper are two of the biggest-selling small cars, but they have been successful because of style and looks as much as on-road performance or practicality. Both cars offer great levels of personalisation, not to mention that retro kudos because of their famous ancestors.

2015 FIAT 500 Power & Handling

The 2015 FIAT 500 has several powertrain offerings beginning with their base engine, the 101-horsepower, 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine which receives up to 40 MPG highway fuel economy ratings. The available 135-hp, 1.4-liter four-cylinder (Turbo) engine produces a little more horsepower, but still receives around 35 MPG highway fuel economy ratings. Both engines are paired with either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission depending on which trim is selected. Additionally, a sport-tuned suspension is available in the 2015 500 Sport and 500 Turbo models. Front-wheel drive is standard across the board for all models.

Scion iQ Power & Handling

The iQ mates a 1.3-liter four-cylinder to a continuously variable automatic transmission for peppy-enough acceleration around town. The sole transmission is a continuously variable automatic transmission, chosen for high mpg. It's as adept as the automatics in the 500 and most subcompacts, and it's worlds better than the ForTwo's ghastly automatic. The Scion has modest power at full bore, but snappy accelerator response and quick CVT ramp-up make the most of higher revs. The suspension rides well over major bumps, and the steering gives decent feedback.

2015 FIAT 500 Features & Design

In addition to the New 7-inch TFT display, an available parking screen helps drivers while moving in reverse if the vehicle is equipped with Rear Park Assist. Other screen options include a radio screen which displays information about the station selected and a telephone screen showing call information for connected devices. Other interior updates for 2015 feature a redesigned center console in order to make it more useful for drivers, the revamped console includes a new cup holder design and an additional, conveniently located USB port that is fully functional and integrated with the radio.

Scion iQ Features & Design

At 120.1 inches from bumper to bumper, the iQ falls between the ForTwo (106.1 inches) and the Cooper (146.8), and its 66.1-inch width roughly matches the Cooper and is 4.7 inches wider than the ForTwo. With doors that make up most of the car's side and no clear distinction between the front bumper and hood, the iQ is an attention-grabber. With the backseat up, there's practically no cargo space at all, but both rear seats fold flat independently for cargo versatility. Though it's small, the iQ doesn't look cheap. The cabin materials are high quality, and the interior design looks new and fresh, with wave shapes on the dashboard and armrests.

Conclusions

Both of these cars have sound basic packages, so we'd go for one of the more lowly editions and add your own touches. The 500e has enough performance to keep most drivers happy, and the savings over posher versions will allow you to choose useful options and still pay less overall.
